Erik Van Heyningen, Baritone/Bass-Baritone

Erik van Heyningen is currently a member of the inaugural studio of the Wiener Staatsoper. Since his arrival, he has appeared solely in premiere productions, beginning with a new production of Henze’s Das Verratene Meer as Der Anfu?hrer/Nummer Eins, conducted by Simone Young and co- directed by Jossi Wieler and Sergio Morabito. Most recently, he stepped into Kirill Serebrennikov’s production of Parsifal, conducted by Philippe Jordan, as der zweiter Gralsritter. In 2021-22 his roles include Donner (Rheingold), 2. Gralsritter (Parsifal), Hobson/Fuhrmann (Peter Grimes), Littore/Tribune/Famigliare (Incoronazione di Poppea).

In North America, Erik appeared with the Santa Fe Opera in a variety roles, such as the Imperial Commissioner in Madama Butterfly, Ragotzki/Archbishop in Candide, and was scheduled to appear as Sprecher in Magic Flute during the Summer of 2020. 

Erik was featured in The Spoleto Festival’s production of Salome in 2019, and enjoyed a longstanding relationship with the Opera Theatre of St. Louis, where he was an award winning young artist and appeared in roles such as The Jailer in The Dialogues of the Carmelites, and Truffaldino in Ariadne auf Naxos. No stranger to the virtuosic repertoire, Erik has appeared as Fernando in La gazza ladra at Jazz at Lincoln Center, and as Argante in Rinaldo with Juilliard415 while a student in the prestigious Artist Diploma in Opera Studies program at the Juilliard School. There, Erik appeared both as Leporello in Don Giovanni and Guglielmo in Cosi fan tutte. 

A passionate performer of concert work, Erik has been presented by the Cecilia Chorus in Bach’s Christmas Oratorio at Carnegie Hall, as a recitalist by the New York Festival of Song at Merkin Hall (NYC), and as a first prize winner of Lied Interpretation through the Gerda Lissner Foundation.
