Tanja Ariane Baumgartner, Mezzosoprano

Tanja Ariane Baumgartner’s performances as Klytämnestra in Strauss’ Elektra and Agaue in Henze’s The Bassarids at Salzburg Festival, her Fricka (Rheingold/Walküre) at Bayreuth Festival and at Lyric Opera of Chicago have confirmed her as one of the leading mezzo-sopranos of our time. Further standout performances that have catapulted her to the top class of international mezzo-sopranos include her celebrated Cassandre (Les Troyens) at the Oper Frankfurt and her spectacular role debut as Ortrud (Lohengrin) at the Staatsoper Hamburg.

In the 2021/22 season Tanja Ariane Baumgartner will be guest at Grand Théâtre de Genève as Klytämnestra. At Staatsoper Hamburg she will appear as Venus in Tcherniakov’s new production of Tannhäuser. Bavarian State Opera Munich will present her as Clairon in the new production of Capriccio during the Münchner Opernfestspiele.

Highlights of recent seasons are Ortrud (Lohengrin) at Vienna State Opera, Kundry (Parsifal) at Grand Théâtre de Genève and Vlaamse Opera Antwerpen, Venus (Tannhäuser) at Oper Zürich, Brangäne (Tristan und Isolde) at Deutsche Oper Berlin, Mary (Der fliegende Holländer) at Bayerische Staatsoper München, Clairon (Capriccio) at Theater an der Wien and Covent Garden London, Carmen at Covent Garden London, Judith (Blaubarts Burg) at Edinburgh Festival, Gräfin Geschwitz (Lulu) and Charlotte (Die Soldaten) at Salzburg Festival, Agaue (The Bassarids) at Komische Oper Berlin, Kostelnicka (Jenufa) in Santiago de Chile, Eboli (Don Carlos), Maddalena (Rigoletto), Azucena (Trovatore), Principessa de Bouillon (Adriana Lecouvreur) and Brangäne (Tristan und Isolde) at Oper Frankfurt. 

Tanja Baumgartner has been a member of the ensemble at Oper Frankfurt since the 2009/10 season. During her time in Frankfurt she has made successful appearances in numerous operas and roles, including among others: Carmen, Cornelia (Giulio Cesare in Egitto), Eboli (Don Carlo), Gora in the German premiere of Reimann’s Medea (which has been released on CD by OehmsClassics), Amme (Die Frau ohne Schatten), the foreign princess (Rusalka), Iokaste (Oedipe), Tigrana (Puccini-Edgar), Charlotte (Werther), Gaea (Daphne), the title role in Othmar Schoeck’s Penthesilea, Clairon (Capriccio) and Preziosilla (La Forza del destino).

Concert engagements have included Mahler’s Lied von der Erde in Munich and Hamburg with the Münchner Philharmoniker as well as at Salzburg Festival and Beethoven’s Symphony No.9 in Tokyo with Sebastian Weigle conducting as well as in Paris with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. At the Brucknerhaus Linz she sang Giuditta in Betulia liberate.

Ms. Baumgartner began her musical studies studying violin at the Musikhochschule in Freiburg and then continued to study voice in Karlsruhe, Vienna and Sofia.
