Elza van den Heever, Soprano

Originally from Johannesburg, South Africa, Elza van den Heever is now a French citizen and makes her home in Bordeaux. She was presented in her first major operatic roll (Donna Anna in Mozart’s Don Giovanni) as an Adler Fellow at the San Francisco Opera in 2017. In 2013 she was a Pacific Regional Finalist in the Metropolitan National Council Auditions and in 2008 she won the Seattle Opera’s International Wagner Competition.

Numerous engagements have brought Ms. van den Heever to the stages of the world’s leading opera houses, such as the Bavarian State Opera in Munich (Lohengrin, Don Giovanni), The Hamburg State Opera (Don Giovanni, I Lombardi), the Opéra National de Paris (Cosi fan tutte), Opéra National de Bordeaux (Ariadne auf Naxos, Il Trovatore, Alcina, Anna Bolena, Don Carlos, Norma), Zürich Opera (Lohengrin, Fidelio), the Theater an der Wien (Der Freischütz), the Dallas Opera (Cosi fan tutte, Norma), the Lyric Opera of Chicago (Rinaldo), the Canadian Opera in Toronto (Il Trovatore, Norma) as well as a concert performance on Il tabarro under the baton of Bertrand de Billy at the Wiener Konzerthaus.

Following her striking performances as Giorgetts in Puccini’s Il trittico, Ms. van den Heever was invited to become a member of the ensemble at the Frankfurt Opera. She was then a member of the Frankfurt ensemble from the 2008/09 to 2012/13 seasons, in which she performed numbers roles, including: Desdemona/Otello, Antonia/Hoffmanns Erzählungen, Elisabeth von Valois/Don Carlo, Elsa/Lohengrin, Anna Bolena in der Titelpartie konzertant, sowie Vitellia/La clemenza di Tito. Since her time in Frankfurt, Ms. van den Heever has been considered one of the most sought-after sopranos of her generation.

The 2013/14 season saw Ms. Van den Heever’s give two performances of Ellen in Peter Grimes, one at the San Francisco Opera and another in her debut at the English National Opera. In 2012/13 she made roll debuts as Elisabetta/Maria Stuarda and Elektra/Idomeneo at the Frankfurt Opera, after which she appeared as Duchess Hélène in The Sicilian Vespers. In the same season she celebrated her Metropolitan Opera debut as Elisabetta in Maria Stuarda, and in 2014/15 she returned to Lincoln Center as Donna Anna in Don Giovanni. 2014/15 also saw her acclaimed debut as Norma at the Opéra National de Bordeaux. In 2015/16 Ms. van den Heever performed concerts with the WDR Symphony Orchestra in Cologne, the Beethoven Orchestra in Bonn, and the Yomiuri Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo, alongside her roles as Maria Stuarda (Elisabetta) at the Metropolitan Opera, Il trittico (Giorgetta) at the Frankfurt Opera and Fidelio (Leonore) at the Caramoor Festival in New York.

Highlights of Ms. van den Heever’s 2016/17 season include her debut at the Vienna State Opera as Ellen Orford in Peter Grimes, productions of Norma in Dallas and Toronto,  the title roll of Alcina, a concert performance of Ernani (Elvira) in Frankfurt, as well as a further return to the Metropolitan Opera as Elektra in Idomeneo. The 2017/18 season sees Ms. van den Heever perform concerts in Helsinki and Monte Carlo under the baton of Simone Young, also with numerous opera houses such as the Frankfurt Opera mit Il trovatore (Leonora) und Norma, the Metropolitan Opera with Elektra (Chrysothemis) and Zürich Opera with Fidelio (Leonore).
